Esports is the growth of video games to include elements more commonly associated with professional sports and compensated players.

Esports will make their formal debut at the Asian Games 2022, marking their first appearance in a worldwide multi-sport tournament.

Esports, like many other types of digital entertainment, skyrocketed in popularity during the Covid-19 pandemic, producing over $1 billion in income for the first time in 2021, the bulk of which came from media rights and sponsorship.

Now it is expected to climb to over $2 billion in 2022.

2: Cloud Gaming

Even the most powerful tech titans like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft can’t create experiences without obvious latency, stuttering, and other difficulties, since cloud gaming remains reliant on robust infrastructure and decent internet connections.

For most competitive online games, this is a deal-breaker.

Many cloud service business models aren’t appealing enough right now, requiring users to acquire games that can only be streamed or pay a premium to stream titles they already possess.

In the future, the industry will need to develop methods to make cloud gaming more appealing or just abandon it until the technology improves.

3: Subscription Gaming

Microsoft has been an industry outlier with its Xbox Game Pass subscription since 2017. However, that will no longer be the case in 2022.

Nintendo has already begun to strengthen its Switch Online membership with additional add-ons and other perks, and subscription gaming is already proving to be a great delivery method for new services such as cloud gaming.

Sony, apparently fed up with waiting, wants to introduce its own Game Pass rival in the coming months, including a tier that might package its PlayStation Now online service with a portfolio of classic titles.

Sony, like Microsoft, may incorporate new releases in the future.

4: AR And VR

The last several months have been dominated by discussion about the metaverse, the ostensibly next generation of the internet on which Facebook, now Meta, is betting its business’s future.

However, there has been little discussion on where augmented reality and virtual reality, the basic tech trends behind metaverse, would head in the future.

In 2022, we may expect to hear a lot more about where AR and VR are going and what sorts of experiences they might provide in the meantime before the metaverse completely materializes.

Right now, both technologies are employed mainly for gaming, but we may see them used more in social and business scenarios in the future.

5: Crypto Movement

2021 was the year when crypto and gaming merged, resulting in massive blockbusters and a new wave of euphoria surrounding NFTs and Blockchain.

Gamers also displayed a strong dissatisfaction with a future dominated by play-to-earn games and a slew of other get-rich-quick schemes derived from the decentralization movement.

Many more firms are expected to enter the blockchain gaming sector in 2022.

VCs are pouring money into the field, including millions from Web3 evangelists, and the financial incentives used behind these play-to-earn games are already popular among younger generations and those in developing economies.

I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed.
